Farewell Furey!
When I first started Philly2Hoboken, I just used the same nickname that i'd use at Hobokenchat.com - Furey. It was my great grandmother's maiden name, and liked it. I have been using it for years for online websites and for online gaming. To me, the name "Furey" was my name.
My "real" name is Sean Iaquinto.
Oh, where to begin. Well first off Sean is Irish and Iaquinto is Italian.
My father's mother was 1/2 irish and 1/2 italian and his father was full italian. So that made him 3/4 Italian and 1/4 Irish. This was surprisng to me because growing up my father was always embracing his italian heritage, and I never even learned his mother was part irish until I was about 22 years old.
My mother, however, is 100% Irish. You might not know this if you saw her, because she has dark hair, dark eyes and tans very easily. The term "Black Irish" would apply to her.
I guess that makes me 62.5% Irish and 37.5% Italian. It's just easier to tell people i'm Irish Italian.
My father's family, as I wrote before, is from Vietri Di Potenza. It certainly was a great experience to see where your ancestory was from. I'm a 4th generation American, with my great grandparents arriving in New York City. From what I understand my original last name was Iaquinta, but at Ellis Island the name was changed to Iaquinto, for reasons not 100% clear. From the story I was told that there were so many Iaquinta's that arrived they divided us into two groups and a clerical error caused the change. Again, not sure about how accurate that story was.
Anyone who has the name Iaquinta or Iaquinto will tell you that there are times we wish it would just be "SMITH". How many times I have had to spend a minute trying to spell my name over the phone. I don't even bother saying the word "Iaquinto", I just immediately start spelling it. For those of you phonetically challenged, its "EYE-AH-QUIN-TOE". I'm sure in Italy it's more like "JAH-KEEN-TOH". But here in America, we did a good job screwing the pronounciation up.
So what else. Well, if you do a Google search you might discover that my name has been out there for some time. I wrote restaurant reviews for Hobokeni a long time ago. I did it for free, because, well, I enjoy writing. After submitting my reviews over the year I became friendly with the owners of Hobokeni. I talked to them about moderating their other website, Hobokenchat, for free. After about 2 years of doing that, they helped me get my blog off the ground and they host it for me.
Other Google searches of my name brings up my Dad's Obitutary. Last month was the 2 year anniversary of his death to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. We all miss him very much, he was absolutely the thread that made up the fabric of our lives. He was the reason I started the blog. The blog isn't meant to be anything more than a creative diversion for me. I share it with my friends, family, my Eagles Club and the various strangers of the internet.
I guess some of you might be thinking as to "why" this is all coming about. First it wasn't really THAT HARD to figure out who I was. I only have like 200 people on my Eagles Email list who know who I am, aside from the 100 or other people in Hoboken who know me, too. It's not like it was that big of a secret.
Secondly, my website was already quoted by the New York Times. A reporter from the Jersey Journal is using my name in an article he is writing in about a month. He asked me what I wanted to be quoted as, and you know what I just felt goofy by saying "Call me 'Furey'".
I was interviewed by PhillyEdge.com about The Philadelphia Eagles Club of Hoboken on Wednesday. This is what prompted this post. I just realized that after two years of blogging that it was time to reveal a bit more. When I first started the blog, I was thinking of making the site "seaniaquinto.com". But I went with Philly2Hoboken, instead.
So there you have it. Hello Hoboken.
